Homeschool Graduation

Anyone planning on graduating in 2012, keep in mind all Michiana area Homeschoolers are invited to participate in a Graduation Ceremony with a possible Graduation date of June 2, 2012. This includes cap and gown, diploma and speaker. It is a great way to celebrate with other Homeschool graduates in this area and finalize your years of Homeschooling! Hangout or snow?

Hi friends,

The long awaited snow has arrived! Yeah! Since I know my kids are dying to get out in it this week, I'm questioning whether we will have many who want to play inside tomorrow. It looks like we will see melting beginning on Wednesday or Thursday. I'm in favor of canceling in order to take advantage of first sledding weather of the season. We can have a make-up day later in the month, since we have 5 Tuesdays this month.

Feel free to connect here if you want to find some winter sledding friends. Mine will be down the street on Barryknoll Way in Granger, when they get their work done.

Homeschool Hangout meets today

Join us from 2:00-3:30 at Clay Church Firehouse Youth Center.

For those of you who are new, enter through the green canopy entrance and go down the stairs. Bring whatever you like to play with. No wheels are allowed in the gym, per the Firehouse staff. Balls are encouraged, we don't have many available. Games, jump ropes, frisbees, footballs, are all o.k. Come and have some fun this afternoon! Mom's are welcome to come and work, visit, or bring anything you'd like to do. We are not a drop off event, unless you have someone assigned to watch your kids and take responsibility for them. That's between you and them.

Also, please review these few rules with your children. Sometimes it's good to have a reminder. I haven't posted any for a while. If you don't get this before playtime today, please review them with them when they get home.

1) We are here to encourage and uplift people, so there is no profanity allowed at Hangout. It's not cool. It's not going to make you cool here. It's just not going to go unnoticed.

2) Bullying of any kind will not be tolerated. God doesn't like it, neither do we.

2) Please encourage/remind your children to be inclusive. Invite others into your game if there is space. We welcome many new children and it is hard to step out and invite yourselves into the fun. Please look out for and notice those who may be standing and watching. A simple, "Want to join us!" goes a long way to making a new person feel at home.

3) The stage. The curtains should remain open. Children may play 4-square on the stage, but that's it. No kids under 8 or so should be on the stage, even for 4-square. It's slippery and easy to fall off - and it has happened.

4) Shoes are required. Please leave your shoes on in the gym. There are sharp objects on the floor, as we found out last week. It's just necessary.

5) Come have fun!

Please come to me if you are experiencing problems with any of these things occurring. I'm vehement about them for the good of the group and have no problem addressing them. If the group doesn't have an uplifting, encouraging environment, it is not meeting it's original purpose.

We'll meet at Clay Church Firehouse from 2:00-3:30 today. Thank you to Clay for their continued donation of space to this welcoming ministry. We are blessed with such a loving staff and congregation. If you feel a little love today, I saw this need on our Clay E-news... Our official giveback to Clay has been help with this mission where many people receive food two times a week.

If you are looking for a good family project to do, here's an idea. It helps with math skills too. Give your kids an amount that they are able to spend each week to feed the hungry. Let them figure out how they can get the most food for that buck to donate to this or another need. Show them how the ads and coupons work. Teach them to watch for the lowest price when the Sunday paper comes. They can move on to meal planning for the week too once they armed.

The Clay Church Food pantry is in need of donations. All donations can be dropped off on Sunday mornings at either location or at the Firehouse House Youth Center Mon-Fri, 8a-4p. Food items in need are: Mac & Cheese, Spaghetti Sauce, Spaghetti, Peanut Butter, Jelly, Canned Vegetables, Canned Fruit and Box Cereal

Join us for the first Hangout of the year. The fun begins one hour later today so we can get more done at home. If you have a volleyball and are coming, could you bring it? Mine is still at the beach. School work has kept us from getting back there to get it, but it's good to be back in a routine again. If you kids have a game they like to play you may bring that also.

What do we do? Adults talk, share ideas and life, and kids play. We enjoy sand volleyball on our two outdoor courts, basketball inside, or free play in the gym. Kids bring things they love to do. While they are playing they are learning to love as Christ loved with adult guidance. They learn to make all feel welcome, developing an understanding of hospitality. Hangout time is a great opportunity to be a friend to someone. It is one of our family missions (an easy one). We may not always need to get out, but there are those who desperately need the love of Christ through us. Sometimes we come to serve and sometimes we need encouragement ourselves.

Prayer available: As we spend each day with a goal of re-presenting Christ to our kids we can be really challenged when we discover our weaknesses. Homeschooling is a parental improvement plan. It's hard. Our weaknesses simply show us our need to surrender all to Jesus. Come talk or pray about that.

We have moms who believe in the power of prayer here. They LOVE to pray and are ready to call out to God in your behalf at any time.

Hello families!

I've had a lot of new requests to join the Google update list lately, so I'm sending this to all. For those of you new to homeschooling or the area this year, there are several co-op type groups around here. Homeschool Hangout does not sponsor classes or co-op type opportunities. It is a place to relax, meet with friends, share ideas, and fellowship. Most of the co-ops are listed on the side of the blog, with the exception of Niles Area Homeschoolers and a couple new ones. You are welcome to send me links if you'd like me to add one of them to the sidebar. We may also resume some opportunities for performance of music or skits a few times during the year so we can share our talents. These will be by reservation. If you have something your child would like to share publicly, I'd love to hear it so we can build something around that.

For those of you who don't know me well or at all, this will be my 7th year homeschooling by three boys. My kids are Ben, 13 and in 8th grade, Jon, 10 and in 5th grade, and Jack, 6 and in first grade. I've been an eclectic, but someone classical homeschooler who is passionate about raising my kids to model Christ's love and share his joy with others above all else. It's a long-term goal, but this is the core foundation of the atmosphere of Homeschool Hangout. We are not exclusive to Christian families. We welcome all who are willing to abide by that simple rule. No profanity is allowed, no bullying, no name calling or demeaning of others. Honor one another above yourselves. This makes the community a great place to be in and this is a great place to practice that discipline. We do encourage the children to TELL if any of these issues that come up. Please let you children know that this behavior needs to be called to my attention if it arises. I won't tolerate it and will address it with the parent and child so we can help them move toward more acceptable behavior. We have had only one or two issues with this in the past with kids who have recently come out of school and the kids have been really understanding of that and merciful. We treat one another with respect and love. God made all people unique with different gifts and talents. You may find that special friend here you've always waited for. God answers prayer so if you believe in that, start praying for this to be on the minds of that family you need to connect with now when all are scheduling their time and deciding on their priorities.

I am also passionate about prayer and currently lead an intercessory prayer group at Clay. If you are passionate about prayer or interested, come see me. We are a spirit led prayer group with some worship as the spirit leads. If you need prayer for anything while at Hangout, I am always available for prayer, just let me know. We can pray privately with two or three for strength. There are several of us who are drawn to prayer available. I firmly believe that we can call the power of God into your life in any situation you need prayer when we seek God's will. Homeschooling is a challenge, as is marriage, life and sometimes just getting through the day! Jesus said, "Whatever you ask for in my name, believe that you have received it, and it shall be done for you." If you believe, you will receive whatever you ask for in prayer.” (Matthew 21:22) If you even feel you are just lacking something and need prayer, such as the peace of God, just pull me aside. God wants you to know he rejoices over you daily and is just waiting for you to call out to Him. This is my ministry in life, so I just look for places where God will use me in it. It is a blessing to me to be able to pray with you. Being in God's presence beats volleyball and chatting for me any day! You may also call me at home if you need prayer during the day. (574-274-0806) Sorry this is so long, but it's really the source of such joy for me that if I didn't get to share it I would explode. ;)

We will begin meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 20th and will continue every 1st and 3rd Tuesday of the month. The time is changing from 1-3 p.m. to 2-3:30. With the amount of work we have to do, I really struggle to get our work done by a 1:00 arrival.

You may drift in or out as your schedule permits. In my home we have found that we don't get much done after Hangout time because the kids are too tired, so we need to work before.

Sand volleyball will be a great activity to begin the year. If you have a particular game to lead or that you can teach in the gym that would be great. A few of us are tolerable volleyball players and can do that until the weather gets too cold.

I just got word that there will be a funeral tomorrow at Clay an they need the space. Homeschool Hangout will have to be moved to next week, May 24 from 1-3 p.m. THIS will be our last date of the year.

P.S. I did get confirmation that Homeschool Day at the Beach at Fuller's Campground will be on Tuesdays this summer. You can start going anytime. They charge $1.00 per person any day before Memorial Day (great deal) and then $1 per person only on Tuesdays for homeschoolers the rest of the summer. I do not sponsor this event, it is open to all homeschoolers. Let me know if you're going! We are there frequently since we have a seasonal camper, but it depends on the day.

Homeschool Hangout meets tomorrow! Last confirmed meeting of the year

Hello friends,

We normally conclude Homeschool Hangout meetings at the end of May. Tomorrow will be our last scheduled day of school year.

Thinking of summer, Clay Firehouse has two great sand volleyball courts. I would expect that we'll have some volleyball afternoons through the summer for those who are interested. These will most likely be informal messages sent out asking who wants to play on a certain day and will open on an r.s.v.p. basis, and when we're not at the beach, as you'll read next.

Another summer option has been Homeschool Beach Day at Fuller's Resort and Campground in Buchanan (about 20 minutes away from Firehouse in Michigan). There is a sand volleyball court on the lovely beach there, with an ice cream stand, inner tube and kayak rentals, and a playground. More details will be posted about that as I get them, but it was on Tuesday's last year. It is good to let people know via the Google group or your smaller homeschool groups that you will be going. Sometimes we have many, sometimes a few.

Monday Food Pantry Service Opportunity

Clay Church Food Pantry needs some strong hands to unload the Food
Bank truck on Monday morning at 10:30. We will be unloading cases of
cans and bags of produce, then stocking the shelves of the pantry. If
you are able to help, it is a fun job and great exercise! Email Anne
Huffman at anne3boys@gmail.com if you are able to help. We will meet
at the Firehouse Youth Center on Cleveland Rd. near Ironwood. The job
only takes about an hour.

Book Sale Postponed

and viewing tomorrow at the Francis Branch library has been cancelled.
We just don't have enough people committed to bringing books on this
date. It was short notice, I know. Sharon Gregor will post a more

Book Sale and Share

There WILL be a book sale and book preview on THURSDAY, April 21 at
the Francis Branch Library from 2-4 p.m. Setup will begin at 1:00.
There will be space for curriculum you want to sell, as well as space
to look at curriculum that is not for sale. We would love for people
to bring a sampling of what they use and to be available to talk about
that with people who come, especially if you use something that is not
easy to view online or that you love. It is a blessing to others to
share our experiences. Here you will be able to compare several books
side by side, something that is hard to do in a large convention.

It looks like we're looking for other options for the sale. We will not have a sale next week. We are going to plan something in a different location, yet to be determined. However, if you'd like to SEE any particular curriculum please post it to the Google group. Those of us who have it will bring it for you to look at during our regular time. I know many of us have so much at home, that it would be very helpful if we knew what you were interested in looking at.

Change Regarding the Book Sale

I was struck by something this morning, that Homeschool Hangout meets in Clay Church. Although that may be obvious, it bears relevance on our book sale. While we do hold sales in the church in which the proceeds benefit the church, we do not hold sales that are for personal gain, which this would be. Fear not! I have a better idea.... I am going to offer you a choice; you may save your items and list them through the board if you are in need of the money, OR you may bring them to the new version of the sale

Clay is a very generous church and we fund many ministries. For those of us who feel led to do so, you may bring your books to sell, but, I will collect the money and let you select from a list of the outreach ministries the Clay Church supports. If you are not able to do this, I certainly understand, but this change must be made.

For those willing and hopefully eager to participate, you may choose from the following ministries and write a check directly to Clay Church with the ministry you choose included in the note. Clay will distribute 100% of your donation to that ministry. Your choices include:

1) You can dig a well to give families clean water in Burkina Faso, Africa

2) Aid the Food Pantry who will personally deliver food to 330 families' homes this Good Friday, April 22. (You are welcome to join us if you register. It's an amazing experience.)

3) Hope Rescue Mission

4) Michiana Youth Ministries http://michianayouth.org/ (Make checks out to MYM.)

5) or the UM Committee on Relief, which has a team providing aid in Japan and around the world.

6) Mission on the Move - Scholarship fund for kids in Mexico who's parents are in prison. I have served there and you could not imagine the impact that this ministry is having on the lives of families. http://www.missiononthemove.org/

7) The children of Clay are also collecting gently used books to rebuild the libraries down South where Katrina's devastating effects are still being felt. I will put a box out for book donations to this cause.

My apologies for not thinking of this sooner, but a verse rang in my head this morning. Jesus said, "My house is to be a house of prayer." (Matthew 21:13) I must defer to that truth. It is such a blessing to be able to serve others. (Of course, you're checks are tax deductible.)

Hi Susan,

My boys fish a lot. Walmart has cheap and adequate poles. Even a kids
pole is fine, in fact, a stick with string and a hook will do. Worms
are always the best bait. Dig 'em up! It's cheap.

Book Sale - April 19, 1-3 p.m.

Hello all,

I've had some questions on the book sale. I'm not sure how many sellers we'll have. Last time we just put the books and materials out and you found the person who owned them if you wanted to buy. You will man your space or keep an eye on it. Name tags for sellers will be provided to help with this, but please keep an eye on your own table.

If you'd like to sell please prepare this way:

1. Send me an email just so I can get an idea of how many people are bringing items.

2. Please indicate in your email the approximate amount of space you will need.

3. This will be like your own personal garage sale for educational items but in a group space, so please bring change or take checks for payment. Educational items ONLY please. (This is in no way limited to books: manipulatives, blocks, puzzles, telescopes, microscopes, index card holders, and office supplies, etc. are welcome.)

4. Label your items with your full name and the price you are asking.

5. Bring them in a box so the book spines can be read. If you have one or two things, we will have a miscellaneous table for that.

6. Sellers, please arrive at 12:30 so we can get a table out for your things. Be available to answer questions.

7. If you are simply buying, please try not to arrive before 12:50.

8. We will close selling at 3:00 p.m. Cleanup will begin at this time.

Note to our regular friends who attend Hangout: Since there will could be a lot of extra activity, or could be, please keep an eye on your children.

We try to refrain from discussion on the stairs or in the entry way so that we do not disturb the Clay staff. Enter through the green canopy door and we will be right downstairs. Kids are welcome to play in the adjoining gym and can also take their board games in there if we need the table space for the sale.

Come join us from 1-3 p.m. at Clay Church Firehouse campus on Cleveland Rd. Many of us are returning from the Cincinnati convention this week, so there may be some new ideas to share.

SALE..... April 18, 1-3 p.m.

If you have curriculum you are ready to sell, bring items with your name and price marked on the cover or inside on a sticky note. We will have some tables dedicated for this purpose. on the third Tuesday of April (this month). If there are specific things you are looking for, you may post thing those things on the list. You may also advertise things you have for sale ahead of time to bring those lurkers who get the email reminders but do not usually attend. You are welcome to bring any educational materials you would like to sell, including books, maps, supplies, organizational items, etc.

Come see what others have shop before you make your yearly purchases elsewhere. We will make room for as many materials as people bring. I will be there at 12:30. You are welcome to come early to set out your materials.

Cancelling due to late afternoon potential white outs and prep-time

Hi all,

I've just watched the weather. I know we won't have accumulation until
around dinner time, but when the storm hits it is predicted to be
white out conditions, which is just said to be this afternoon. I'm
also figuring we may have low attendance today since many may be
preparing to be snow bound. I have heard from a few people so far.

So, light a fire, prepare for potential power outages and read a book.
We'll see you on the 3rd Tuesday. Did you know that filling the tub
enables you well water people to have flush water? Stock the wood! I
am praying for no power outages.

I'm listening to the weather, and while it's not a problem this
morning, it could be blizzard like this afternoon. If we are seeing
white out driving conditions, I will probably cancel today. Just check
the blog www.homeschoolhangout.blogspot.com for the news. It does come
to your email, but often not as fast as it is posted there.

Jack has been praying for more snow over his head since the last snow
started meltin. We're all asking him to stop praying and I think we'll
give him the church prayer list instead. He seems to get results.

Homeschool Hangout meets this Tuesday

Join us from 1-3 at Clay Church Firehouse Building for a fun day of
fellowship. I know we have two new families with girls coming this
week, so those of you who have been waiting for more female
representation are encouraged to join us this week! I hear we're
going to have some snow. If we cancel, it will be posted on the blog
site listed below. The building generally closes when the South Bend
Schools close.

Bring anything your kids would like to do! There is a foursquare grid
on the stage, so bring a bouncy ball if you'd like to do that.
Footballs and basketballs and jump ropes are all o.k. No wheeled
items like skateboards are allowed, but frisbees and flying things are
fun too.

Come have fun and encourage each other in this snowy long winter.

We meet at Clay Church north building on Ironwood, just north of Cleveland. We should have at least 7 tomorrow night so come join us! We bring a snack to share and something to do. We have beaders, stitchers and scrappers. It starts at 6:30 and closes at 10:00.

It's a great time to concentrate on something without the interruption of little people, although junior crafters are welcome if their attention span allows. Young girls would be a great addition to our evening and we have had kids in the past. Young crafty boys are also welcome if they want to come.

At the same time, same place, there is a 4th-5th grade youth event at Clay. It's called Thrive. They have a lesson, play games and eat pizza. It's very fun and well supervised. Clay has their staff holiday luncheon in the fellowship hall on this
day. We will move our meeting from 1-3 p.m. to 2-4 p.m. but are still
able to meet and do our cookie exchange.

COOKIE EXCHANGE NOTICE!
Again, if you want to take part in the exchange, bring your cookies in
quart size bags with 6 average size cookies per bag, more if they are
tiny like spritz cookies. I"ll add that these must be homemade, mixed
from scratch cookies. Store bought or slice and bake are not
acceptable, since many will put much effort into their cookies.
Homemade fudge or candy is acceptable. Just make your contribution
comparable to the 6 cookie per quart bag size. I recommend bringing
at least 6 bags to swap. You will take home as many as you bring and
those who bring the most get first place in the swap line.

Hi all,

Happy Thanksgiving. This is a 5 week month so we'll have two weeks off in a row.

I noticed some posts weren't published on the blog and we have some new people, so I'm updating the page. Yeah and welcome new friends! A reminder that we meet on the 1st and 3rd of each month. We will meet on both days in December unless travel plans for many interfere.

Come enjoy free time on Dec. 7 for the kids including board games, (cold) sand football outside, and warmer open gym time. (Bring a ball or equipment for what you want to play. We lost ours.) It's free time for Mom's too. Thanks to Cindy for the great lesson on juicing last week. We all were blessed by your generosity and thank you for caring enough to teach us about good nutrition and what you've learned.

The boys have been setting up Heroscape and want more time, so we'll be there at 12:30 next time to let them have some extra time. You are all welcome to come early that day too.

We'll do a cookie exchange on December 21 for those who are interested. This was a hit last year. We'll talk about the amounts we want to make at the December 7th meeting.

We have more middle sized girls coming too, so encourage your girls to join them and bring their favorite game or activity.

We're meeting this Week!

I look forward to seeing you all this Tuesday. We're going to have warm weather. Perhaps we can imagine that the parking lot is the ocean as we play sand volleyball in the new court. Can you see it with me? If not... I'm not shocked. Come anyway. There will be soccer or free play in the gym, games around the tables, and volleyball in the new sand courts outside. There are two courts and I have one ball, so if you have another one you can bring, we can get two games going at once. Volleyball is so fun, because it teaches teamwork and is fun for all skill levels.

Thanks to those who came last week and were patient and encouraging through my turmoil of continuing. I have been praying for God to show me direction regarding the necessity for Hangout. Since those coming at the end of last year were already involved in other groups, I thought it may be time for Hangout to end, and for me to move on, so I advertised that Hangout would close.

As I was reflecting after the meeting last time, I remembered a key point that I preach to others; when things look really difficult and obstacles come up in the way of something you are going to do, it historically has meant this in my life -- the enemy, Satan, who I believe lurks around us all the time, seeking opportunity to distract us from God's plan, knows that God has something great in store; so he throws darts of discouragement at us/me. I'm sharing this so you understand that I'm not plain indecisive, AND I'm not asking you to agree with me, but believing is seeing. When I saw the faces who came last week, I knew we must go on. You are answers to prayer. To further encourage me, I had two families approach me this morning at Clay who needed to know more homeschooling families. That made three families in 2 days. I was able to tell them about the great friends they would meet at Hangout, you.

There is nothing more fun that being somewhere God places you, where you can watch Him work in your midst. I'm afraid my gift is connecting people, and nothing is going to stop me from doing it. God is so good to me. There is always such inner joy when I see how faithful He is to me.

So, my wonderful friends and volunteers, thank you for your willingness to help host. I'm afraid you won't be missing me much. I just won't be able to stay away, unless we have sick kids or travel. There will be new families who need to feel the love, concern and fellowship of other HS'ing families and your gifts together are what makes it a place I love to be. I'll see you Tuesday friends, old and new!

May God bless you with friendship, hearts that notice the loneliness of others, hands that reach to them, words that encourage, and joyful heart as you get to spend time with the greatest kids ever created, YOURS!

Volunteers have offered support - We are CONTINUING TO MEET

(My apologies at this double post Google members. It didn't post the first time. My error.)

Dear homeschool friends,

It was so nice to see old friends and make new ones today. It seems there is indeed a need to continue the Hangout and we had many volunteers to alternate hosting in order to make that happen. We will continue on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of each month.

One of our concerns was the need for fellowship and space for the older kids. In the future, we'll have an hour available where we will keep the smaller children out of the basketball court area so there can be a full game of basketball, soccer of other announced activity. We had a nice selection of middle school kids today and a few high schoolers. If you have high school kids who want to use the board to gather kids who are their age, they/you are welcome to post there to coordinate who's coming. There was discussion concerning providing the older kids some space to do what they want to, so if your kids have an idea that they'd like see happen, please communicate that. We have rotating hosts who will help you make that happen.

We had a good game of soccer going today and kept the toddlers and preschoolers in the other room for that. Next week will we be taking up a game collection. If you have a game that you'd like to keep at Clay for Hangout, we will be filling a bin next week. Donations are welcome. We already have a box of Duplos for the younger kids, so donations would be for a set of crayons and coloring books or paper, and games from toddler to adult.

Firehouse has a new sand volleyball court outside! Next time 9/21 we will open that to kids 4th grade or older who want to play or sports minded 2-3rd graders. There are two courts available. Bring a ball if you have one and you'd like to play, please. I don't have one yet. Adults are welcome to join in too.

Thanks to those who came today to voice their support and commit to attending. We had a great turnout, now all we need is a new supply of name tags.

Welcome to a new school year everyone! For those new to homeschooling this year, congratulations. This will be my 6th year teaching my kids and the third year hosting Homeschool Hangout. I have three boys: Ben, age 12, Jonathan, age 9 and Jackson, age 5. We have enjoyed meeting new people and having a place for face-to-face interaction in a casual atmosphere.

I know there are many who need connection to others in the homeschool community. This has been a calling of mine in the last two years as I have hosted this ministry. I have made the gym and my time available to direct people to local groups and for people to come who need to get out. This need has not changed for many, but the direction of it may need to. My activities have to change with the needs of my family and what God leads me to do on a yearly basis. I am going to discontinue Homeschool Hangout after this month. For those who have joined over the summer and have not attended yet, please come and connect this week! We will be meeting this week, as advertised and will help you find connections to a group. Perhaps Hangout will be championed by someone else with time, need and passion for it to happen. See me if you are one of these people. I will be glad to share my experience and connect you with resources to do this.

There has been a need for regular group activity for the older kids in the winter. I am looking into volleyball as an alternative for kids 4th grade and up. I'll communicate more if this comes about.
We have not been able to accomplish a successful arrangement where the older kids are able to use the gym with the younger kids running around. Younger kids are happy to go to the park or run about, but the older ones need the challenge of like age peers and a bit of competitive activity when they need to blow off steam. Hangout in it's current format does not fit that for anyone. In the case that someone would like to HOST a day for kids in 5th grade and below, please contact me and I will be glad to be a resource to you.

For now, thank you for all who have supported me and others in this. P.S. What am I up to?.......

As for me, I will be teaching a co-op class this year, assuming a new leadership role at church and pouring more time in to intentional teaching of my rapidly aging children. My ministry passion this year is to share my faith by connecting young people with the needs of others by introducing them to life mission work, and families to the ideas of visionary Christian parenting.

I have a kid who came home from camp full of the Spirit and eager to serve others, so I need to provide intentional hard work for him and opportunity to know the needs of the world in a hands on way. It won't hurt the other two either! God is going to provide me direction, but I need the room to listen.

If God has laid a love for the lost, the elderly, the needy, the sick or the poor on your heart this year, give me a call. Perhaps you'd like to volunteer to serve those who come my way. I'd love to offer homeschool families the opportunity to share that training in Christ they've received to support the body of Christ and the needy. I will be coordinating this through Clay Church or a small group.

The Christian Home Open House is coming up. For those of you new to home schooling, this is a Christian Co-Op group that has many activities for all age levels. Their open house is a great way to see some of what is available in the home school community, from the Park Department to art classes and clubs. For those of you new to Homeschool Hangout, we are not a co-op, but a place to come, relax, meet and play. This is an organized group where you can bring up an idea and have a larger base of people to connect with. There is no online group communication right now and you must be a member to get their newsletter and participate. The Open House is open to everyone and a place to see what they are all about.

Back-to-School Fair

Thursday, August 19

Our annual Christian HOME Back-to-School Fair will be held on Thursday evening, August 19, at South Bend Christian Reformed Church, 1855 N. Hickory Road, South Bend, from 6:00-8:30 p.m. Once again, admission is free, and it is open to all homeschoolers. This will give you a chance to join Christian HOME for the 2010-11 school year and meet representatives from the community who offer opportunities for homeschoolers in an open house format. Please feel free to invite your friends or any new homeschoolers you meet. We will offer a Homeschooling 101 session for new families who have questions.

We will offer a ―free table again this year where everything is free for the taking. If you have gently used homeschool books and supplies that you no longer need, this is your chance to declutter and bless another homeschool family in the process. Bring them with you to the Fair where there will be a place to display them. Any items left at the end of the night will be donated to a local charity.

We're trying something new this year for those who have used curriculum for sale. There will be a table at the Fair where you can place a list of items you would like to sell. All you need to do is create the list and be sure it has prices and your contact infor-mation on it. Make as many copies as you wish and bring them with you. You can place them on the ta-ble where interested families can take them and get in touch with you.

If you don't already have a volunteer role in The Christian HOME, please be thinking and praying about how you would like to serve the group this up-coming school year. As a co-op, we depend upon the participation of every family to make this group the best it can be for our kids. We will have sign-up sheets at the registration table for you to fill out at the Back-to-School Fair. We are urgently in need of people to fill the following positions:

Beach day was a hit!

Hi friends,

Kirsty and Mark Dykstra, owners of Fuller's Campground and Resort are offering all homeschoolers entry to their wonderful beach for $1 per person EVERY Tuesday this summer. You will undoubtedly find many of us there on Tuesdays. We came at 11:00 this week and filled up 2/3 of the beach with our families. We were joined by a few other beach goers after 1:00, so getting there early works best. We were the majority!

Meetings at Clay will cease until further notice. Too many people loved the beach and want to go back!

Additional fun can be had renting single or large 2-man tubes, kayaks, Hobie Cat boats, paddle boats at very reasonable rates. The lake also offers GREAT fishing. Kids fish free, but adults cannot cast or catch without a Michigan fishing license.

When you're ready to cool off, there are about 16 flavors of Sherman's ice cream at very reasonable prices in the beach store. Inside you'll also find a table for chess and checkers, corn dogs, pizza and other treats, and other tables to play games or cards if you want to get out of the sun. Under the pavilion there is a game room with pinball and a few other games, right on the beach.

Directions to Fuller's Resort beach

From Granger or South Bend: Go north to Hwy 12.

From Granger: Take Gumwood north, turn left at Redfield Rd. then right again where Gumwood resumes. This will take you to 12. Go left (west) on 12. You will need to take the exit to 12 west when that appears.

Continue West on 12 to Bakertown Rd. You will pass JD's Truck Stop and a gravel quarry on the way. The last light will be Redbud trail. Watch for Bakertown on your right.
Go right/north on Bakertown.
Pass the farm co-op on the left and watch for Front St. on your right. PASS Front street and take the next left on Elm Valley Rd.
There is a Fuller's sign there.
Turn right at the "T" in the road. This road dead ends into the campground. Park in the lot there and check in at the store. The cost will be $1.00 per person. The beach is right there. We can meet in the shady area to the left or by the water.

From South Bend: take business 31 north or any road west of there that connects to 12. You will NOT need to look for the 12 West exit, you are already on it. Follow the directions to Bakertown Road, they are now the same.

Returning: if you are going back to Gumwood, be sure you take the 12/Sturgis exit to continue on 12, then you'll continue until Gumwood.

Tuesday Beach Day for Homeschool Hangout

Homeschool Hangout will relocate to the beach this week! If it is a
rainy day, we will meet at Clay Church/Firehouse as usual. An email
confirmation will be sent out in the morning if the weather is not
clearly lovely.

This Tuesday, Fullers Resort (www.fullersresort.com) is offering
Homeschool Day at the Beach. It will be $1.00 per person, a
discounted rate. They will offer this every Tuesday! We have camped
at this beach for 4 years and know it well. The beach has lovely
white sand and plenty of shallow area for small children. There is a
playground and baseball field not far from the beach too. There is
penny candy, non-penny candy, a great ice cream counter, and kids can
get little $.25 cones if they are 4 or under. There are bigger cones
for hungry people too, of course. Come rest and hangout with friends
this Tuesday. Pack a lunch and meet us there around 11:00. You can
buy hamburgers, hot dogs, pizza and snacks in the pavilion if you'd
like to. If you can't get there by 11:00, you can come later. I
would plan on being there before 1:00 if you want to meet everyone
else. Please RSVP to me (anne3boys@gmail.com) this time so I know who
to look for. Also, let me know if you plan to come later.

Clay Women's Life Craft Night is March 26.

Happy Spring! (It feels good to say that today.) I just got notice that the Clay Women's Life craft night will be March 26 this month. That is a week EARLIER than usual. Some of you have joined me in the fun. You bring a snack and any craft (or activity) and hang out with an awesome group of women. We really have NO criteria regarding what you work on; some knit, some cross-stitch and SOME play Scrabble!

On April 2 (Good Friday), which WAS craft night, Clay is doing a unique activity. We will NOT have a service, but will instead be reaching out as stated below.... One of our staff commented that since many of you have been supportive of our food pantry, you may be interested in joining us in this event. If you'd like to do a little ministry instead of being ministered TO on Good Friday, you are welcome to join us. The boys and I will be serving too. You'll be given instructions and the food.

On Friday, April 2nd, Clay Church will be leaving the building and serving our community distributing food to 300 families in the LaSalle Park Neighborhood. Volunteers are needed during the morning, afternoon or both. Clay Food Pantry is sponsoring this sharing event. Register HERE.

Next Hangout 12/1 - COSTUME DAY

Hi everyone,

Susan reported that you had good attendance Tuesday while we were home sick. The weather is officially unwelcoming when it comes to outside these days. We'll meet Tuesday December 1, from 1-3 p.m. The schedule will move to weekly soon. We'll see how attendance is on the 1st.

If you haven't been to Hangout in a long time and don't want to receive these emails, you are free to sign on and remove yourself or ask me to remove you. I don't want to burden your mailboxes unnecessarily. The website is www.homeschoolhangout.blogspot.com if you want to pass it along to a friend or someone you meet.

New families are inquiring about the Hangout regularly and it has been such a blessing to be able to have regular fellowship and get to know new families. The kids are playing so well together and finding others who share their interests. For those of you who are new, you certainly can play with your children if you like, but you can also sit and chat, play a board game with the adults, knit, read, etc. The kids are very happy to be able to man their own creative play time and have been coming up with many role playing adventures.

My son is encouraging the idea of a COSTUME DAY. So, on 12/1 if you would like, bring your kids dressed in a costume or creative outfit. I'm sure it will spawn some fun. You older kids are welcome to be in a costume too. Maybe you can create a skit based on your characters.

We are continuing to collect for the Clay Food Pantry at the Hangout, so if you are able and not contributing elsewhere, bring some packaged food items or money as God directs you. My son Ben's Sunday School class has adopted the Food Pantry as their mission this year and 150 families use it monthly.

We had some chess players last week. They may be ready for more competition. Bring a favorite game, a ball, or activity you or your kids love to do. Come and hangout and connect with great (or tired) minds who need a break. All ages are welcome and represented.

You are always welcome to call or email me if you have questions. If you are a new homeschooler, or considering homeschooling and want to talk to a live person, I'd be glad to offer you some encouragement, answer questions, or help connect you with someone with children in your age range. The Hangout times are great for meeting new friends. It's a safe, friendly environment where all are welcomed. We are very casual.

If your child has special needs, please let me know and we can advise some of the other children of this and instruct them in ways to help them feel more welcome.

Some of us will just be starting lessons after Labor Day and some are already deep into books. By Friday of next week (Sept. 11) there may be many of us ready for some fellowship and relaxation.

Come Friday, September 11, from 1:00-3:00 p.m. for some fun. If you are a chess player, bring a chess set. I have some kids who need some competition. You are welcome to bring board games, balls, or other toys for indoor use. Please leave the roller skates and skateboards home. We want to be sure all ages feel comfortable and safe.

Did you see the NEW TIME? 1:00 - 3:00 p.m. This will be the time on Tuesdays as well.

Hello Hangout friends,

It's been a long summer, but Fall is coming. You may be in the middle of creating schedules for the year and deciding on what to sign up for. Clay Church is also planning their fall study offerings for those of you who are interested in a small group, so check their website in the next week.

The Hangout day will be Tuesday again this year so plan accordingly if you want to fit it into your schedule. That seems to be the day with the fewest organized activities per other groups. September is a busy time for some of us as we get into a routine so we will not meet regularly in September. Here are a few things I want to pass along to you with the first Hangout Day.

1) Auditions for Clay Dessert Theater is Nov. 13 and 14. The musical this year will be "Godspell". Auditions will be on

Saturday Aug 29th
10am to 12:30pm
and
Sunday Aug. 30th
6pm to 9:30pm

There will be a small children's choir (age 7-12) and an adult choir (age 13-300) as well as the main parts. I know there are some dramatic kids out there who may love this opportunity. You talented old people are welcome to audition too. It's open to the community.

2) Sept. 22, Tuesday from 1-3 p.m. Fall Fellowship "Meet and Greet" day - Homeschool Hangout Day

You or your groups are welcome to come and meet there to connect for any co-ops you may be interested in starting among yourselves. We'll have board games and indoor gym activities. Note: there is no outdoor playground anymore. It is being replaced with a sand volleyball court which will provide some great group fun - when it's done. Kids can play in the far south parking lot if they want to play kickball or frisbee, etc. Age 5-7 (use your discretion) and under must have a buddy or parent outside with them.

I have arranged a slot for homeschoolers to go as a group to Navarre Cabin Days downtown South Bend in Leeper Part East on Tuesday, October 13 at 10:00 a.m. We will meet there. Here is the description from the Center for History: I will post an update when this fills up.

One of our most popular school programs is the annual Cabin Days program. This living history program is designed to coordinate with social studies teachers who are teaching 4th grade Indiana history. Cabin Days takes place at the Pierre Navarre log cabin in South Bend's Leeper Park East. Pierre Navarre, considered to be the first European to permanently settle in St. Joseph County, built the cabin in the early 1800s.
During Cabin Days, Center for History volunteers, dressed as pioneers, demonstrate cooking, recreation and trades about life in 1830s Michiana. Lively interaction occurs as students, eager to learn about pioneer life, ask questions of the pioneers they are visiting. Students may stop to talk with the Navarre family who are cooking outdoors. They might also be curious about the jars of sassafras root, rosehips, willow bark and leeches (careful, they're real!) that set in rows in front of Doc Hardman. And the school marm always welcomes the children to her schoolhouse as she teaches lessons from The New McGuffey Second Reader.

Clay Church is offering FREE tickets to their Musical Mission Tour home performances on June 5 & 6 at 7:00 p.m. You will not be disappointed! They will be performing a mini-musical of Beauty and the Beast. It's very kid-friendly and will be very well done. I can't tell you enough about the quality of the director we are blessed with at Clay. Sara gets these kids to perform to high standard and to make the most of their talents.

FaithWorks! VBS 2009

For those of you looking for a unique Vacation Bible School experience this year, "Studio GO!" means we learn to GO and serve others. Their will be five daily focuses including: Go Lead, Go Risk, Go Tell, Go Obey and Go Serve. Clay Church will connect kids with Hope Ministries (formerly Hope Rescue Mission) by assigning them a resident to pray for through the week, they will make a gift for them and have an opportunity to present that gift at Hope in person later on. They will also have a boys vs. girls competition to raise money for the Clay Food Pantry. At the end of the week, the winners get to torture one of our volunteers in some messy way. Of course there will be crafts, upbeat fun music, and great acting to reinforce the message. The kids will also make the pieces for a quilt made by the kids to be auctioned off for the Food Pantry.

As if that isn't enough, there will be a HUGE outdoor family night on Friday to end it all called Fun in the Son, complete with our great youth band Ladder 316, a dunk tank and more. Build-a-bear will be there so kids can create their own special bear and have a chance to give it to a child in crisis. It is open to the community, so if you want to register for that ALONE, just go to www.claychurch.com. So, if you would like some help teaching your kids that "It's not all about me!" register them for this week of learning real ministry to people with real needs.

Hello friends,

The demand for being inside at the Hangout seems to have fallen off. It is just so beautiful outside! We will not have indoor hangout until further notice this summer. I have encouraged the few who came Tuesday to post some spontaneous or planned activities.

There are many things to do this summer: the beach, a trip to Meijer Gardens would be fun, Fernwood, a theme park visit and trips to the park are all on my list. If you are heading to the zoo or the park one day, post a message for someone to join you! I hear there is football at Oddfellows park on Wednesdays, someone can post the time on that event and the ages allowed to participate. There is a nice walking trail and playground there with shade too.

Also, the member list on the Google group communication page is readable by members only, so you can feel safe putting your name and contact information on there if you want to share that with others. I have a contact list too that I can email you again if you are new or lost yours.

To those of you who committed to the Hangout, thanks for a your support this year, you were a blessing to me and my family- and Clay Church. Jean Womer, the head of the Clay Church Food Pantry sent a lovely thank you card to you all for your gifts over the winter. It has been a busy winter feeding many in need. Don't forget that if you feel a need to give, you can shop and drop donations right inside the door in the can at the Firehouse.

There will NOT be Homeschool Hangout this week. We are all recovering from a cold/flu. In the next few weeks the schedule will be updated so keep an eye on the website or watch for emails. Open Gym AND Presentation Day

Hi all,

Last night I attended a great meeting at the Firehouse for parents and learned about what else is going on at the Firehouse and in Faithworks for kids of all ages. Wednesday nights there is fun, pizza, a message on faith, someone teaching kids to play the guitar, small group discussions going on. I am excited to get involved in all that next year! We also learned that parental modeling of faith is key in determining whether kids accept Christ after they grow out of church. You are irreplaceable! We had some great discussion among the parents too. I'm really just telling you this because I love my church family. My ACTUAL point here is that it was the unveiling of the modification of the old sanctuary and they've changed the alter into a larger performance platform.

So... tomorrow we will still have open gym for 2 hours AND we will have performance time upstairs at 3:00. This should solve the sound problems and seating issues we've had downstairs. Those who want to stay downstairs may do so and they won't have to worry about the noise like last time.

You will see pictures of factories on the sides of the stage. It's part of the theme of the fire of the Spirit and the transformation of people, raw materials, into people who serve God.. (albeit.. it does look a little gloomy.. but I know I was pretty gloomy before knowing Christ too.)

Note.. you do not have to perform to come tomorrow. It is completely voluntary. If your kids just want to enjoy the music, poems, or presentations, please encourage them to do so.

Also, condolences and sympathy and prayers to those of you from First Unitarian on your loss this past week on the death of Kathleen Curtis.

Just because someone is bigger, he is NOT to be persecuted. I'm not sure who I'm speaking to here, but I am addressing a complaint. It's a fun game, but not an outlet for your hostilities.

If you are new to the area or someone considering homeschooling, this is a good place to meet a variety of homeschool families.

4/28... Curriculum Share. Bring things you want to show others or sell. We'll have coffee and talk books! Kids will be on their own for free play and the gym will be open. It's a good week for new homeschoolers to see what we all do. We'll have a table marked for item's available for sale, so put your name and price on each thing. Put your name on ALL items you bring to make it easier for others to find you with questions. Please grab a nametag when you come in so people can find you to ask questions about what you have available. You are responsible for collecting your own money.

5/3 ... Presentation day. This is an opportunity to read a poem you have written, show something you're really proud of that you've worked on this year, play a piece of music you've learned or something similar. Please limit yourself to 3-5 minutes, or the equivalent of two short pieces or one long one. We want to distribute the time evenly. We will begin presentations at 3:00. Free play will be available before that. At 3:00 we will need to limit gym time to quiet activities so we can hear the presentations.

April 14 Hangout Free Play Schedule

This week we will be having free play time, but with a little enhancement. We will be dividing the gym time between the older and younger kids.

2:00-3:00

Kids 0-5 (or so) get the left half of the gym.

Kids 6-12 get the right side of the gym. (Perhaps we can try a variety of games so there is something for everyone.)

Be prepared to divide with chairs.

Hopefully this will allow the small kids some run around time free of being tripped over! Organizers of games for each group would be helpful. Relay races could be set up with some props like the bowling pins.

3:00-4:00

Teens get the gym! Organize a game of soccer, basketball or something else, but the younger kids have to hit the game room! If you need more players and want to invite the 11-12 year olds in on a game, you may do that. Teens do not HAVE to be in the gym, but if you have been dreaming of this option it may be good to use it or you may lose it!

Plan your day as you wish. We'll see how this works. I'm taking a few survey suggestions and trying them out, so feedback is helpful!

Drama Week Next Week at the Hangout

Hi everyone,

I have noticed and learned from a few moms that we have had some injuries here and there so we're going to make some changes to the plan for a while and see how that goes. It is my sincere goal that the Hangout at Clay be a place that all of you feel welcome, so if you have a concern, I really encourage you to tell me so that all kids feel comfortable and welcome.

Because of this, we're going to call an end to dodgeball for the next couple weeks so we have kids available to play other games and activities. In the beginning some suggested drama as an activity, so this coming week we're going to do Drama Day. Some of us have an entire cast in our own family, but other's would need to form a group from multiple families. You may gather this group at the Hangout next week. This is your opportunity to express yourself in a non-threatening fun way for a very gracious audience. Grownups and kids are all welcome to perform. Talent and complexity are NOT necessary.

If this interests you, please come next week with a skit or two to work on with your group. I will bring a few too. You are welcome to bring costumes, props or whatever fits your story. Here will be the attempted format:

2:00-3:00 Pick a skit, gather the needed people and see if you can get it together by 3:00 for a performance.

3:00-4:00 Time to perform! We will do the skits by those who are ready at this time. If you are NOT ready, you may come back the week after NEXT week and do your skit. There will be no hangout April 7. This will give you time to do something bigger or with more preparation.

You are welcome to prepare something before this week if you have the necessary people together and bring whatever you need for a 3:00 performance. These do not need to be elaborate skits! They can be as simple as a funny dialogue that you read (rather than memorize) or you can show us your hidden talents and do something challenging.

I hope to give those with talents a forum to display their talents, but also just to give some of us a little public speaking experience. Questions and feedback are welcome. I am not sensitive and may forget important details.

If you aren't doing drama, you can still come! Games will be available or bring your own activity. (No more skateboards though, please, unless you take them out to the back parking lot. Shoes are recommended inside as well unless you want to contribute to the band-aid drawer.)

Homeschool Hangout Reminder

The Hangout will be open tomorrow. We're supposed to have warmer weather, but rain. If it's still dry, we'll open the playground. Bring whatever your kids would like to do with other kids. You are free to bring snacks. There is a snack machine ranging from $.50 to $.75 per item, but sometimes the inventory is low. We supply water and if you'd like, coffee. We now have a facebook group to share photos. You are welcome to upload yours to the site.

This is a monthly service. I have not attended it yet, but hear it is really a cool experience. We have several special needs families who regularly attend the Sunday services, but this formated differently.

A nice day for the playground!

Happy St. Patrick's Day to all!

For those of you who don't want to be trapped inside during the beautiful weather Tuesday, the playground will be open! There is also a potluck at noon to celebrate St. Patrick's Day. Bring a dish at noon and join that event or just come at the normal time of 2:00. We'll separate out the gym time so there will not be dodgeball going on for the whole 4 hours. If there are those who'd like to coordinate another game, you will have some space to do that.

For the adults, this week is a great day to bring a craft or something to do. You could have a lot of free time tomorrow! It will also be a good time to play a game that takes longer, like Risk, HeroScape (my kids are excited to bring that tomorrow), Scrabble, or Settlers of Catan. Bring your favorite. Everybody had lots of room and freedom on the last nice day since many of the smaller kids went outside.

Homeschool Hangout Reminder

Get out of the rain and onto some fun! Bring a favorite game or organize your own. Meet us at Clay Church Firehouse Youth Ministry Center from 2-4 p.m. Tuesday. We have a large group of dodgeball fans (all ages are welcome to play), but half the gym is open for other games and free play.

Next week Tuesday (March 17) there will be a St. Patrick's Day potluck at noon before the Hangout. If you would like to come bring a dish and join us! The Hangout will be on as usual after that.

The kids were able to go outside and enjoy the playground, so don't forget that nice days don't mean we're all locked in the gym! Thanks to all of you for your incredible teamwork on the clean up. What great servants you are.

Additionally, you all have wonderful children. Watching them all get along and easily welcome new people has been a blessing to me. It is one of the things I most love about homeschooling, that kids learn to appreciate each other, just as God made them, just as they are, for who they are. For those of you who are new to homeschooling, it is a climate that is hard to replicate in our culture. I hope you will see the blessing of it too and be encouraged to seek out one of the great seasoned homeschooling parents there for encouragement if you are having a hard time or need some advice.

I have to say, I left last week I felt so blessed and humbled to see how God opens so many doors when we just do something simple that he inspires. He has been working hard in the hearts of our congregation over several years to prepare the way for all this to happen. So, thank God and the responsive people of Clay Church for listening and trusting faithfully that God has things to do through us! Thank you to my Clay Church family for their outstanding generosity, and commitment to keeping these two buildings running, although it has involved some sacrifice for all of us, I hope you can visit our website occassionally and see how you are blessing others. We have had over 150-200 different people welcomed through our doors in the last month. Parents of homeschoolers have a hard time finding a place to connect on a regular basis in large open groups. Nothing like this has ever been available to our homeschool community in the South Bend area. It is open to all, because it's free and because you made it possible! Thanks for being the hands and feet of Jesus to those in our community.

We have also begun a "giving back" ministry to the Clay Food Pantry. This food pantry is open to the community and is very busy. There are cards on the entry table of items that are needed on a regular basis. Pick one up and stick in your purse. It's a great way to help the kids learn to think of those in need. We have gone to the store with the list and an amount we would spend on these items and let the kids figure out how we can get the most for our money. If you aren't feeling that organized, a few bucks in the basket helps us purchase from Angel Food Ministries too. It is especially hard to meet this needs of all who come in this tough time.

Valentine's Snack Swap This Week

The Hangout should be back on for this week. We're almost recovered, one left to go. I've had several generous help offers for the future too. I'm also disinfecting the Lego's!

This week we'll have a Valentine's snack swap. It can be anything, red or not. If you're having a challenged day and can't get anything together, I'm sure that there will be enough from those who can. Bring something if you feel moved, if you don't, just come and visit! We will also add some big water coolers so if you want to bring a cup, or donate a bag, we can keep them there.

Another note: Bring a ball if you are serious about basketball. We have a few, but have lost the Upwards basketballs to Upwards so that supply is not there anymore. Other sporting equipment like jump ropes or football flags are welcome. Just note that there are a lot of kids playing nicely in one big room, so sometimes the gaming has to be creative. It's been really fun so far.

Parents: If you're brand new, note I have added a Rules of Conduct page to the website. This ensures that behavior that is inappropriate, or makes someone uncomfortable, can be corrected by those who catch it. I am not offended if you correct my children as I expect them to respect all adults who ask them to be considerate of others. It helps us all. Safety and kindness are the rule!

Hangout CANCELLED today...

Greetings all,

My youngest is still throwing up this a.m. and I know it's a bad flu time of year for all. I'm going to have to cancel today.

If you need to get your energy out perhaps you can share on the boards or the comments for the Hangout any alternate suggestions you have. Soccer Zone is fun for the small to medium size kids (not free) on a cold day.

Sorry to all. I'm looking into how to arrange a team to manage some of the smaller details like sign in, water jugs, clean up, and management for different ages. If you want to volunteer for one of those on the comment board we may be able to hold it in the future if I'm not here. I must first verify that with the Clay staff, but the volunteering would still be a good idea. We have a lot of people to manage and toddlers with pool table balls can be dangerous! (That's about the only danger we've come close to having. You have all been a GREAT group!) I'll post needs on www.homeschoolhangout.blogspot.com when I assemble them.

Homeschool Hangout Reminder

We're on for today. I looks like we'll have a good number of teens today. Teen parents, if you want to help split the gym in half so the bigger kids can play ball without worrying about the littler ones, I'm fine with that. We'll just need to tell everyone. Maybe right side for big, left side for small?

Also, since we are such a quickly growing popular place to be I have added some conduct guidelines to the blog site www.homeschoolhangout.blogspot.com to pre-empt any problems. We have not had any problems, but as coordinator and sponsor for Clay Church, I need to be sure we are on common ground with behaviors and such so parents can help each other out. The hangout is open to all people of all faiths, but things that happen within the church must be in line with vision of the Firehouse ministry center so I have included their vision at the bottom of that so you can get to know what they are about.

We have had great parents and kids involved so, thank you all for making this a fun place to get together!

Conduct and Vision

The Hangout is a great place to make friends, but remember you must BE a friend to HAVE a friend, so I thought it wise to write out our guidelines and expectations so that ANY mom or dad who needs to guide a group of kids back on the “BE a friend” path may do so with authority.

Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing. (1 Thessalonians 5:11)

No bullying, hitting, pushing, kicking, demeaning or foul language of any kind. God shows us mercy and love, so we expect that same love to be shown to one another. Everybody is special and equally important. No exceptions.
We must stay in the lower level, unless you are a group that has authorization to meet upstairs.
When you finish playing with equipment, please put it back where you got it, respect others property.  
If you play a game, please put it back in it’s box when you are finished. If you have something you don’t want to share, please put it in a bag or out of sight. 
You are welcome to eat and bring snacks, but please keep them out of the gym. We sweep after the Hangout and one room is plenty to do.  
Parents, if you see behavior that is inappropriate, unloving, or dangerous, please help by stepping in.
No playing on the stage. (Unless you've prepared a drama or an act to perform!)
You are welcome to bring your own (safe) sporting equipment, toys or games. A favorite game may be a way for your child to build leadership skills as they explain the rules to others!  
Please begin cleanup by 3:50 so we can get everyone out by 4:00.

Thanks for preparing your kids in advance so all kids of all ages and stages can feel welcome and encouraged. As an active member of Clay Church I can say that we are excited about being Christ followers and so strive to arrange all we do to honor Him. Jesus started a movement and His church is more than a building, it's a body of those who are passionate about serving Christ, who changes lives. (You do not need to believe this to come to the Hangout! All are welcome. You will need to honor conduct rules.)

Many of you have commented at the great need this is meeting! When I hear that, I thank God and get new energy, because I know then that I've done what I've been asked to do. In the last 20 years, my life with God has been an incredible adventure! I'm an idea person, but God gives me ideas because I ask him how I can serve him. They are not all my own! It makes life purposeful and FUN. Homeschool Hangout Reminder

We're on for this week! We should have a good crowd.

Please note that we have to keep the kids downstairs. Staff works upstairs and we don't want to be disruptive because we LOVE our Hangout time. Please let the kids know when they come in about not going upstairs.

You are welcome to bring a project you're working on or do a group craft. If anyone is interested in a weekly discussion topic that's a possibility too. Otherwise, there's just plenty of fun to be had.

We're going to try a game of People Pac-Man on the basketball lines this week. Come and have fun!

Homeschool Hangout was a big success...

Hi all,

Several who missed us have asked for an update on how it went, so here it is. We had 8 families in spite of the balmy weather. The very little ones enjoyed the giant bin of Duplos. There were colorers, game players, basketball, football, tug-o-war and a couple of pre-school spies lurking behind the stage curtains in the secret tunnel. There is a big bin of basketballs, so you may leave those home, but other sporting equipment is fine. We even had someone on roller blades. If your kids have a game they love, bring it. I will also have games available. If you're learning something neat, like Origami, that would interest others, we could set up a table for that.

Next week I estimate attendance will at least double. The Michiana-Life (yahoo group) has been a great way to keep in touch and had several represented. Messages also go out to the homeschoolhub@yahoogroups.com so you could share comments or ideas there, as well, but that board seems to be less active right now.

I will keep attendees in the computer and print out the contact information for those who've already come on the checkin sheet so you can exchange information. In answer to my prayers, my son, Ben, found two new boys his age and they had a great a time.

If you have a few teenage girls, we'd love to see some of them come. Perhaps they would like to make some beaded bookmarks or earrings! If so, I will bring my beading supplies next time and teach them how. Perhaps someone else has another talent they would like to share with one of the age groups (or the moms). There is plenty of time to bring something you are working on.

I would suggest bringing a snack and drink for your children. There is a pop/drink machine and snack machine if you choose that. The cost of each item is $.50 and supports youth activities in the church.

There was also a suggestion to put out a free-will contribution to help support the cost of running this great building, so I will bring a basket for that.

CANCELLATIONS due to weather will follow the closing of the South Bend school system. If they close for a half day, or are off otherwise, we will still be open, since I don't know when that is anyway. Why should we suffer!

If you know of people who are NOT in a group and they would like to be on the contact list they can either send me their email address or join the Michiana-LIFE board or homeschoolhub group on Yahoo. Additionally, I have a page that will contain the updates so you can check them directly on the web, You may link to it from www.hshub.org (when I set it up) or directly at www.homeschoolhangout.blogspot.com.
